Exclusion Statements
The new AP Chemistry Course Description contains 23 exclusion statements, each paired with a specific Essential Knowledge statement. This new inclusion is meant to clarify the level of understanding to be tested for ambiguous topics. The College Board has stated on page 8 of the AP Chemistry Course Exam and Description:
“Exclusion Statements define the type and level of content that is excluded from the AP® Chemistry course and exam or represents knowledge students should have acquired prior to participating in this course.”
Thus, some of the "excluded" topics must still be covered in AP Chemistry or pre-requisite courses for a successful completion of the AP Chemistry Exam. These include: phase diagrams, colligative properties, and Lewis acid-base concepts. Each of the exclusion statements has an accompanying rationale, which clarifies the reason for content being excluded.
