Curriculum FormatThe new AP Chemistry curriculum is framed around
6 Big Ideas. These are further broken down into Enduring Understandings, Essential Knowledge statements, Learning Objectives and Science Practices. |
Exam StructureThe number of questions on the AP Chemistry exam has changed. There is a new equation sheet, and no longer any time separation for the free-response section of the exam.

Curriculum TopicsThe list of testable material for AP Chemistry has been modified. New topics include spectroscopy, alloys,
polymers and connections to biochemical systems. |
LaboratoriesStudents are now required to complete 16 labs for AP Chemistry. Six of these labs must be run as guided inquiry experiments.

Question TypesThere is new emphasis on students' ability to design experiments, to interpret and analyze data, and to construct particulate representations of chemical processes.

Instructional MethodsThe CollegeBoard is recommending the use of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) strategies in day-to-day teaching.
